Digital Wellness for Grown Ups
I was not familiar with the idea of "digital wellness" or the movement that it has become, but Cal Newport gave a good summary of it in this article. The essence of it is that app developers and tech companies are creating programs for mobile devices that chastise you for using technology (e.g., an image of a wilting plant when you pick up your phone). And, of course, you have to install this technology on your phone, etc. Newport says this is all very childish. What people like this need is a real friend to sit them down and tell them to shape up. Well put. And I would add that simply installing another app to help with your bad habit of too much time on your mobile device sounds a bit counter-intuitive. Are the app makers really who you want to turn to for help avoiding spending time on your phone? Their motives are compromised at best.
