"He Shall Testify" chapter 6 of JI Packer's Knowing God

In this chapter, Packer discusses the Holy Spirit.  With so much written about him in the NT, why do we pay him so little attention?  His work includes the following:

  1. Being sent by the Father and the Son to do the will of the Father (John 14:26; 16:7).
  2. Reminding and teaching the disciples about Jesus and his (Jesus's) teaching.  Thus we have the guarantee that the NT is the word of God to us, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the words of the apostles and writers of the NT (John's gospel is packed with references to the HS's activity in this way, e.g., 16:12-15)
  3. Causing the new birth, that is, giving faith and creating spiritual life (John 3:3-8; the basis of Paul's work was this demonstration of the Spirit's power: 1 Cor 2:1-5).

Packer closes with a warning that we not dishonor the Spirit by ignoring his witness (the Bible) or by attempting to replace him in our gospel proclamation with gimicky, human cleverness.
